Baywood's charm lies locked in its somewhat hidden location between Morro Bay and Los Osos. It's a quiet, cozy neighborhood, that is, until you walk into The Merrimaker on a Friday or Saturday night for an exciting and entertaining evening of Karaoke. This hard-to-find tavern is certainly one of the hot, fun spots worth checking out.

The wide variety of local talent that shows up to sing at The Merrimaker is the most interesting part of being there. Men and women of all ages, and walks of life, enjoy listening to their fellow stars as they await their turn to hold the almighty mic. People really enjoy being in the "spotlight," even if it is just for a brief moment. You can sing your song at the bar, in the middle of the crowd, by the pool tables, or anywhere you might want to hide if you're the least bit shy.

One person who is not shy, and one of my favorite singers, is Nettie Knowlton. This pretty woman, with her warm, endearing smile, really belts out the song "Cabaret," just like she's singing on Broadway. By the end of her song, she has the crowd roaring with cheers for the pure excitement she brings to the audience. The next singer up might be Sax, singing a song from AC/DC or Led Zeppelin, or Debi with a new country tune. Steve Acker is

usually the host for the evening. He keeps the show hopping, pulling the next singer's name off of his full board of eager singers. Millie's name is called up to sing a b1uesy older song and then there's Lady Di. Heck, she sings everything. Oh, and of course, everyone's favorite perky gal, Valerie. She really has fun with the crowd. She's a natural. California Karaoke also gets a  tremendous crowd on Tuesday nights at the Otter Rock Cafe in Morro Bay on the Embarcadero. If that isn't enough, or just not the nights you can get out, try Rose's Landing on Wednesdays, also in Morro Bay or Wilson's in Paso Robles on Thursday. The inside word has it that a Karaoke monthly contest with great prizes, is in the works.

All in all, Karaoke is just great, clean FUN!!! So, bring your shower cap if you have to, because I hope to see some more new faces at The Merrimaker. Who knows, you might even get to hear me sing -- wait I am still kind of shy -- we'll see.

The Merrimaker's address is 1301 2nd, Baywood. Be sure to say "Hello" to Larry, he's a great bartender.
